About the Event:

Join ADSNY for a special event when Benjamin Macklowe, the President of Macklowe Gallery, will host us for a special talk exploring the elegant and sophisticated jewelry of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. From the organic and curvilinear forms of Art Nouveau to the geometric and Machine Age aesthetic of Art Deco, this talk will highlight a wide range of luxurious jewels.

The Art Nouveau style appeared in the early 1880s, it was a shimmering presence in urban centers throughout Europe and North America. The style of the age, Art Nouveau embraced all forms or art and design, and represented the beginning of modernism in design. At a time when mass-produced goods began to fill the market, Art Nouveau artists reclaimed the craft tradition, and favored new, organic forms that emphasized humanity’s connection to nature. It was one of the first movements to bridge the barrier between fine arts and applied arts, and applied its stylistic elements to all aspects of living.

Such can also be said of the Art Deco movement that followed in the 1920s. Although a radical change in terms of philosophy, the Art Nouveau and Art deco movement both embraced all aspects of the arts, notably architecture and jewelry. The Art Deco movements was inspired by a world of luxury and decadence the golden ages, a fusion of history and modernity that gave it its unique character.

Benjamin Macklowe has appeared on television to discuss Tiffany lamps with Martha Stewart, lectured on the art glass of Emile Gallé at the Taft Museum of Art and taught about Art Nouveau jewelry at Christie’s auction house on multiple occasions. Under his leadership, Macklowe Gallery has become one of the world’s most respected dealers of antique and estate jewelry, French Art Nouveau decorative arts and the entire oeuvre of Louis Comfort Tiffany.
