ADELAIDE became an official member of the West Village family when it opened its doors in May 2006, occupying a garage and trucking warehouse originally constructed in 1937 at the corner of Tenth and Greenwich Streets. Architect Stephen Alastair Wanta designed the interior, balancing the industrial nature of the original building with a modern, sophisticated use of the space.
In addition to complementing the aesthetics of the West Village with an elegant exterior suggesting the architecture of the F.D.R. era, this commercial establishment showcases exceptional pieces of furniture, design objects, and artworks spanning those glamorous and creative decades, the 1930s to the 1960s. Its window displays, which are changed several times a month, spotlight unique design pieces set in a distinctly themed environment.
Within its brick walls, and beneath an aluminum and bronze moderne chandelier, some of the finest examples of American and international modern design are on view. Visitors to ADELAIDE encounter a past of varied aesthetics and styles that represent mid-century design at its best. As stated in the October, 2008 issue of GQ magazine, “That it has one of the city’s most vibrant collections of mid-century furniture is beside the point. You fall in love with Adelaide for its scale. The shop is small, its stock changes weekly, and it forsakes the familiarity of Saarinens and Eameses.”
This retail establishment is operated by its co-owners, Michael Smith and Mary Corliss. For nearly 30 years, Michael Smith was the founding proprietor of Depression Modern, a legendary design store in SoHo that specialized in 1930s Art Deco furnishings. Mary Corliss is a former Museum of Modern Art assistant curator who, over a 34-year career, organized 41 MoMA exhibitions of film photographs and artifacts prior to establishing ADELAIDE with Mr. Smith. Both owners respect and understand not only the historical value of restoring and making available the design pieces they sell, but the importance of preservation that is essential to extend the life and spirit of all things beautiful, whether they be a graceful object or an entire neighborhood.
