The diptyque story began in Paris 56 years ago, at 34 Boulevard St-Germain, with three friends Christiane Gautrot, interior decorator, Desmond Knox-Leet, painter, and Yves Coueslant, theatre administrator and set designer. Previously designing fabrics and wallpaper for Liberty and Sanderson, together they teamed up in 1961 and opened the first diptyque boutique to showcase their fabric designs. With their unique taste, they gradually transformed the store into a chic bazaar offering a fascinating variety of unexpected items, unique to Paris, which the trio brought back from their travels. In 1963, they introduced the first diptyque scented candles––Aubépine, Cannelle and Thé––and a few years later, they launched their first eau de toilette, L’Eau. Today, the brand’s extensive product portfolio includes home and personal fragrances, along with a body and skin care line, and unique decorative objects.
Since its creation, diptyque has been cultivating an art of living of which it alone knows the secret. A very Parisian harmony made up of scents and refined objects whose aesthetic functions as an extension of this world of surprising but very natural fragrances. An elegant world that translates an authentic freedom of spirit, an openness to the unexpected and to new encounters. All of this took place in Paris at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain, in this shop with the two windows resembling two panels of a painting: a “diptych” (or diptyque in French) that became the firm’s name. The place soon became a “chic bazaar”, as the press referred to it, that people flocked to––and still do today––to experience the fragrances of its soul.
Always a memento of a precious moment, each of diptyque’s creations tells a story and expresses everything wonderful that nature has to offer. A scent is a world of its own, and diptyque fragrances each like to tell their stories, whether its openness to the world and its natural treasures, expertise, inspiration from passing styles and infatuations, the curiosity of unexpected accords, the choice of rare ingredients, a free spirit driven by culture and audacity or a sincere attraction for simplicity.
Exclusive New York City Candle
Diptyque launched an exclusive New York City candle, designed with the intent to celebrate the spirit of the city. The packaging pulls inspiration from the creative, art deco-inspired architecture and unique decorative elements of the city and will be sold exclusively at diptyque boutiques in New York. This was the brand’s third US city-exclusive candle.
The New York candle design is inspired by the fascinating and muffled atmosphere of the city at night. It carries bright silver and golden art deco lines against a night-blue background. The scent is an engaging resinous scent––a warm and elegant composition of the woods cedar, vetiver and patchouli, enhanced with mysterious incense and waxy tobacco, like an echo to underground speakeasies, made popular in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, located throughout the city.
