ADSNY Annual Meeting
Beyond Brownstones: Art Deco in Brooklyn
Where: Brooklyn Public Library, Dweck Auditorium
Where: 10 Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn, NY, 11238
About the Event:
Join the Art Deco Society of New York and the Brooklyn Public Library for a delightful, free talk about the Art Deco history of Brooklyn in one of the borough’s most iconic Art Deco buildings, the stunning Brooklyn Central Library.
Architectural historian Matt Postal will present an illustrated talk that explores the Art Deco story of Brooklyn and how the style, in the 1930s, expanded beyond Manhattan. In this presentation we will see striking architectural examples that illustrate how the city’s newest subway routes transformed the neighborhoods along their paths.
From Williamsburg to the shores of Brighton Beach, Postal will survey how and where this vibrant and colorful style took root, paying particular attention to public buildings, such as the Central Library, and a varied group of memorable middle-class apartment houses.
Postal’s talk will feature unique stories such as the twists and turns throughout the development of the Art Deco Brooklyn Central Library, which, when construction began in 1912, was originally intended to be a domed, four-story, Beaux Arts structure.
